Riello Burner Maintenance and Common Problems

Updated: August 2026 · Beray Enerji Technical Team

When a fault occurs on a Riello burner, the burner performs a "safety stop", signalled by a red lockout LED. The display on the operator panel alternately shows the lockout code and the fault description. This article covers Riello's general fault display logic and the problem categories most often seen during maintenance.

How does Riello display a fault?

If a fault arises during ignition or operation, the burner performs a safety stop signalled by the red lockout LED. The operator panel's display alternately shows the lockout code and the fault description. There is also a colour-coded visual diagnostic system during commissioning, showing the pre-purge and ignition phases — useful for quickly identifying which stage of the ignition sequence the burner is at on site.

Riello's control boxes are generally known under the RMG (Riello Modular Gas) series name; some models come with a reset button extension accessory, which makes resetting easier on sites where the box is panel-mounted.

Common problem categories

Faults resulting in lockout

The categories covered in our general fault code guide — flame signal loss, insufficient gas pressure, air pressure switch signal — operate on the same basic logic on Riello equipment; what differs is how that information is coded on the display.

Repeated lockout after reset

If the burner runs briefly after a reset and then locks out again, this usually points to a marginal signal issue (for example, an ionisation signal running close to the threshold) — see our short cycling guide.

Visual diagnostic warnings during commissioning

If the colour-coded indicator shows an unexpected pause during pre-purge or ignition, this usually points to an issue with air pressure switch or gas valve timing.

Priority checks in Riello burner maintenance

  • Lockout LED and display history: check whether recent faults are retained in the display's memory — this speeds up diagnosis of a recurring problem.
  • Reset button access: on panel-mounted control boxes, check whether physical access to the reset button is easy.
  • Ionisation/photocell signal measurement: the microampere measurement covered in our general fault code guide is the most reliable way to catch a marginal signal problem early.

When can you try a reset yourself, and when is service needed?

A single reset can be tried when the red LED lights up. But if the lockout repeats consistently, call for service rather than continuing to reset — this is the basic rule that applies across all brands, as covered in our general fault code guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a red LED mean on a Riello burner?

The red LED indicates the burner has performed a safety stop (lockout). The display alternately shows the lockout code and the fault description.

What is Riello's control box series called?

Riello's common control box family is the RMG (Riello Modular Gas) series; some models come with a reset button extension accessory.

Why does a Riello burner lock out again after a reset?

This usually points to a marginal signal issue, such as an ionisation signal running close to its threshold, and should be diagnosed with a technical inspection.

Where can you find the full list of Riello error codes?

Since the full list varies by control box and burner series, the exact list is found in your burner's manual. ---
